Darkest Dungeon is a gothic turn-based roguelike built around one idea: the dungeon damages your heroes' minds as surely as it damages their bodies. Every hero carries a stress meter alongside their health, and darkness, critical hits, and watching a comrade die all push it higher. Death here is permanent, and the game is built so you feel every loss.

 

Push a hero too far and they develop an Affliction, becoming paranoid, selfish, abusive, or hopeless, and start working against your party instead of with it. Occasionally a hero rallies with a Virtue instead, becoming briefly heroic when you need it most. Between expeditions, you manage a crumbling estate town, deciding which heroes get scarce resources and who gets sent back into the dark.

A Combat System Built Around Positioning

• Rank-Based Combat: Fight with a four-hero party where every ability only works from specific positions in the line.
• 16 Playable Hero Classes: Build your party from a roster including the Crusader, Plague Doctor, Hellion, and Leper, each with a completely different toolkit.
• Permadeath: Lose a fully-leveled veteran for good, three rooms from the exit, and feel every bit of it.
• Quirks and Diseases: Watch your heroes pick up permanent traits and illnesses that shape how you use them going forward.

• The Hamlet: Upgrade the blacksmith, guild, sanitarium, tavern, and abbey between expeditions.
